“Kick Heard Round the World”– Rematch in the Works?

Was Ronda Rousey just having a bad day? Was it time for her reign to end? A rematch was finally confirmed yesterday.

Fans have been wondering when, not if the rematch would take place and Dana White commented on the Mike and Mike show that he thought he and Lorenzo Fertitto should lose their promoting licenses, should a rematch not happen. Doubtful he meant that for more than humor, but he said it all the same. English: Dana White, president of the UFC.

But a rematch would never happen if the contenders were not both in agreement. That said, when approached, Holly Holm told Yahoo Sports,

“I think a rematch makes sense for sure, I’ve been on the losing side of a fight, and I wanted the rematch; I wanted to avenge my loss. With a champion like Ronda — who has gone out of her way, above and beyond, to do great things — absolutely she deserves a rematch. I don’t look at this belt and think I’ve made it, I think I still have things that I need to do. I think a rematch, I think that’s kind of unspoken common sense to me.”

Then there’s Ronda Rousey. She still has yet to comment publicly on whether or not she even wants the rematch. After the fight, she seemed very upset, understandably so, and some sources close to her said she wasn’t making any decisions just yet about a rematch. But Dana White has been the one in talks with her and he says without a doubt that it’s happening.

Fans of The Rowdy One are sure she’ll be back. Fans WANT a rematch. Even Holm, on her appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers stated,

“I’ll have to train twice as hard, She’ll be coming back hard. She’s a competitive person, and we all know that, so she’ll be coming back hard.”

The way I see it, all Ronda has to do is train for a fight with Holly Holm. Ronda is used to winning in the octagon in just seconds. I believe she got a little too confident. Maybe even cocky. Her moves appeared to be less than her real abilities. She didn’t need 100% with challengers before Holm. She’s that good.

Keeping in mind her background as a boxer, Holm avoided grappling with Rousey. She got her on the ground, but until she was certain she had her beat, Holm got up immediately and gave Rousey a chance to follow. If she stopped using her brain when Ronda was down, if she forgot Ronda has more experience and has ruled the octagon floor and had she stayed on the ground with her, Ronda probably would have been the one to emerge undefeated. That’s what Ronda does. But Holm didn’t forget. That paid off for her and now, Holm is the one who remains undefeated and Ronda has a loss.

Ronda Rousey will come back. She’s too stubborn and proud not to. But will she learn from her loss? Will she study the video of the upset and train accordingly? Holm seems to think so. And as it stands, Oddsmaker Bovada has set the opening line to Rousey vs. Holm “Do-Over” as with Ronda at -175 (4/7) and Holly at +145 (29/20).

The date has yet to be set, but Dana White says adamantly the immediate rematch will be the first Bantamweight Title Fight.  Holm’s first challenger for the title will be the one from whom she took it. What the fans want (and will pay for), White is willing to deliver – and collect – for the many fans waiting to witness Ronda “Rowdy” Rousey going for revenge for the “kick heard round the world”.  Including me.
